Business and Commerce
The largest employers in Darien and McIntosh County
continue to be forestry and commercial fishing, although
the area, including Sapelo Island, has become increasingly
dependent on tourism. Darien and McIntosh County are
experiencing an unprecedented growth in tourism and
economic development. New residents and retirees are
drawn to the stunning natural beauty and outdoor recreation
opportunities of the Altamaha delta. This unique site was
once a Guale Indian village, Spanish mission, British
Colonial fort and, eventually, a town settled in 1733 by
Scots Highlanders. The historic waterfront, meticulously
preserved Victorian homes, tabby ruins, and colonial Fort
King George draw visitors from around the globe.
Increasingly business ventures, both new and existing, are
also discovering the Darien advantage.

The McIntosh County Development Authority has completed
a beautiful waterfront park in downtown Darien that offers a new bike path along the Darien River and docking facilities. Especially during spring, summer and fall, this park is the site of vibrant community gatherings and festivals, complete with live music, attracting significant tourism dollars into the community. The College of Coastal Georgia is located south of Darien, in Brunswick, Georgia. As a unit of the University System of Georgia and a new four-year institution, the College of Coastal Georgia provides pre-baccalaureate programs of study for transfer, baccalaureate programs in education, nursing and business, preparation for immediate employment in a variety of technical program areas, assistance to students who are preparing for college-level study, and lifelong learning opportunities for workforce development and career enhancement as well as personal development.

In Darien and McIntosh County you will find all of the elements necessary for economic success: a wide variety of available state and local incentives, a trained and accessible workforce and a superior infrastructure. The low cost of land and availability of support services serve to make Darien a prime location for a diverse range of business interests and employers.
